Laboratory experiments show that an extract of the skin of muscadine grapes can inhibit growth of prostate cancer cells in the laboratory...

Using a series of human prostate cancer cells, representing different stages of prostate cancer progression, the researchers showed that MSKE [muscadine grape skin extract] significantly inhibits the growth of cancerous, but not normal, prostate cells, primarily by inducing a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Programmed cell death is one of the mechanisms the body uses to rid itself of cells with unrepaired genetic damage before those cells can duplicate themselves...

The chemical constituents of muscadine grapes differ from most other grape varieties, as they are richer in chemicals called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins, which produce the red and purple colors of the grapes, have strong antioxidant activity and have shown several antitumor effects, including inhibition of DNA synthesis in breast cancer cells, of blood vessel growth in some tumors, and of enzymes involved in tumor spread...

Even though MSKE had significant inhibitory effects on the prostate cancer cells studied, it did not alter the growth rate of the normal human prostate cells in the lab, which served as controls...

The work of Dr. Gary D. Stoner and colleagues at Ohio State University has demonstrated that Ellagic Acid is chemopreventive, and that extracts of fruits containing Ellagic Acid derivatives are even more powerful than the individual purified substances.

Synopsis:
Muscadine grapes (Vitis rotundifolia) contain some of the richest pigmentation and phenolic concentrations known among berry fruits. This study examined the effect of ellagic acid and other flavonoids from muscadine grapes on parameters of colon cancer cells in vitro. Cancer cells were prevented from proliferating and had increased rates of apoptosis (higher natural self-induced death rates) resulting from exposure to ellagic acid from muscadine grapes.

Note to consumers: An indigenous specie of the southeast USA, muscadine grapes are exceptional sources of ellagic acid and other phenolics that may reduce cancer cell numbers and stimulate cancer cell death.
In addition to Ellagic Acid, here are just a few more of the health-enhancing, cancer-fighting phytonutrients found in muscadines:
  • Resveratrol helps regulate the cell cycle. If your DNA is damaged, it can either be repaired or cell systems can program the cell to die. Grape seed extract may stop colorectal cancer spread

  • Extracts from grape seeds, a rich source of proanthocyanidins, stopped the spread of colorectal cancer cells in lab mice, suggests new research funded by the US National Cancer Institute (NCI).
  • Interest in grape seed extracts has been increasing, particularly in Europe where half of the world's grape seed extract is said to end up. The health benefits of its grape seed extract have mostly focused on heart health, but there is also evidence of benefits of grape seed extract against skin and prostate cancer. Moreover, the NCI is currently conducting a trial on grape seed extract and women who are disposed to have a higher risk of breast cancer.
  • The new study, published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research (Vol. 12, pp. 6194-6202), presents data of in vitro and in vivo studies and suggests the extracts may also have benefits in the prevention of colorectal cancer, which accounts for nine per cent of new cancer cases every year worldwide...

It has been shown that calorie restriction activates a deeply hidden protective mechanism that is controlled by the Sirtuin 1 DNA repair gene. When Sirtuin 1 is active, DNA can be repaired and cells live longer. Because DNA repair is improved, the cells do not collect mutations and become cancerous as rapidly.

After one month, all participants taking the supplements had a significant decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure...While both extracts [150 mg & 300 mg] produced similar decreases in blood pressure, the scientists observed that the 300 mg extract also reduced blood levels of oxidised LDL-cholesterol (the “bad cholesterol”), which has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease by a variety of experimental, genetic and epidemiological studies...

Grape seed extracts are rich sources of antioxidants such as catechins and flavan-3-ols, and subsequent dimmers, trimers, and tetramers. These polyphenols compounds are found in highest concentrations in the seed of grapes…

In the book Muscadine Medicine, the authors detail research being conducted on the anti-inflammatory characteristics of Muscadines. The results indicate that:

  • Muscadine extracts prevent an inflammatory response to a bacterial product called lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
